    Back in 2008, Microvast established our primary R&D objectives to innovate: “ultra-fast charging / long life/ non-flammable” Li-ion battery technologies for automobile applications.
    Non-FlammableBattery Technology
    The industry in general believes that lithium-ion battery has certain risks of random short-circuiting and thermal runaway during its production and use, which can cause accidents. Microvast’s non-flammable battery technology takes both active and passive protection measures to protect the battery from short circuiting, resolving battery safety issues through a multi-level approach from materials to the system level.
    Non-Flammable Electrolyte
    Research has shown that when thermal runaway occurs in a lithium-ion battery, most of its heat is released by electrolytes, which means electrolytes are the key point to ensure safety. Thanks to tremendous effort over eight years by our research team, Microvast has developed an electrolyte that is non-flammable and can be fully charged within 10-15 minutes, with a long cycle life of over 10,000 times.

    Temperature Tolerance Separator
    A high-performance separator is also an important protection measure for lithium-ion batteries. The newly developed separator uses ‘KEVLAR’ as its basic material, which has excellent performance of insulation and heat stability. Moreover, it has a higher melting point compared to commercial ones, which ensures that it does not shrink even at temperatures of up to 300°C. This has reduced the possibility of thermal runaway and short circuiting.

    In addition to improvements of the electrolyte and separator, from the aspect of battery system protection,?our Smart Thermal Liquid (STL) technology?has a built-in passive protection system to ensure a non-flammable battery.


    This cutting edge technology can be applied in different kinds of electrochemical systems, which significantly improves the safety level of lithium-ion batteries.

    Microvast LpTO (Gen I) technology is built upon lithium titanate (LTO) chemistry, which is known for its outstanding electrochemical and safety performance, unmatched abuse tolerance, excellent capacity retention at extreme temperatures, while being considered the safest chemistry in the lithium-ion family.


    With years of intensive research, Microvast has successfully resolved the gassing issue of LTO by material modification. Microvast launched LpTO technology in 2009 and delivered into commercial operation since 2011. Field performance data shows that after 6 years of heavy-duty commercial operation in full electric transit buses, LpTO battery shows minimum capacity degradation.

    In Oct 2013, Microvast launched its LpCO (Gen II) technology, which uses modified porous carbon as anode material, with higher energy density than LpTO but still with fast charging capability. LpCO battery can be fully recharged within 15 minutes, with over 10,000 cycles.

    In Apr 2017, Microvast launched it MpCO (Gen III) ultra-fast charging battery technology, which 41% higher energy density than LpCO, which lowers the cost of the battery system.

    Smart Thermal Liquid
    • Liquid Immersion
      Our proprietary Smart Thermal Liquid (STL) technology effectively enhances battery safety by immersing the battery modules in non-conductive liquid. This minimizes any contact the battery cells may have with external moisture and impedes the spread of fire from any accident.
    • Better Performance
      STL technology enhances battery performance and extends battery life by maintaining consistent battery temperature through circulated or static liquid, depending on cooling requirements of the application.
    • Safe
      STL absorbs heat generated during battery cycles and automatically balances the temperature by circulating the liquid. The liquid is able to prevent possible thermal runaways by isolating the battery module from the air, detecting minimum electrolyte leakage, and etc.
